Elk Hills: construction update

Journal Article · · Pacific Oil World; ()
OSTI ID:6197464
During the record-breaking August heat wave in the South San Joaquin Valley, the highest temperature anyone observed on the thermometer inside the huge steel tank a construction crew is laboring to install at Elk Hills was 168 F. Normally, highs ran more in the 140 to 150 range. The tank, 210 ft in diameter and 40 ft high is one of 5 under construction near Elk Hills Road at the south edge of the field. The tanks, in turn, are part of a current $26 million construction effort aimed at preparing the Elk Hills field for its role as California's number one oil field as mandated by Washington in 1976. Some 300 men are engaged in the construction effort presently unfolding in the sun-baked hills. In addition to the 5 huge tanks, each capable of holding 250,000 bbl of crude oil, other projects include construction of a 100 MMCFD gas plant and construction of facilities to reinject dry gas into the field's Stevens sands.
