Biodegradation products of PAHs identified by mass spectrometric analysis
- Univ. of Cincinatti, OH (United States)
In the quest for detoxifying harmful PAHs in the environment by biodegradation some helpful microorganisms were isolated from coal gasification plant sites. These microorganisms were incubated with selected PAHs and the metabolites thus generated were extracted, pooled and subjected to HPLC analysis. The isolated metabolites from HPLC were analyzed and characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy and high resolution mass spectrometry. The metabolites due to the degradation of carbazole by Xanthamonas sp. were indole-2-acetic acid and indole-2-acrylic acid. The metabolites due to the action of the microrganism Mycobacterium sp. on pyrene were identified to be 4,5-pyrene-dihydrodiol, 4-phenanthroic acid, and 4,5-diphenanthroic acid. Similar experiments with benzo(a)pyrene and benz(a)anthracene with the above organisms indicated ring cleavage products and dihydrodiols.
