Correlation length and order of the deconfining phase transition

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. Lett.; (United States)
We analyze SU(2) and SU(3) lattice gauge theory on/ital L//sub /ital t///times/L/sup 2/infinity lattices (/ital L//sub /ital t//less than or equal toL). By..beta../sub /ital c// we denote the critical coupling at /ital L/=infinity. In theneighborhood of the deconfining phase transition, at appropriately definedcoupling constants ..beta..(/ital L/,/ital L/'), /ital L//gt//ital L/' (with..beta..(/ital L/,/ital L/')/r arrow/..beta../sub /ital c// for /ital L/'/r arrow/infinity), the correlationlength xi scales /similar to//ital L///ital L/' for second- and first-ordertransitions (xi=1//ital E//sub 1/ with /ital E//sub 1/ the energy ofone unit of 't Hooft electric flux). Linearization around the couplings..beta..(/ital L/,/ital L/') allows the calculation of critical exponents.Numerical results (/ital L//sub /ital t//=4) support a second-order transition forSU(2), but not for SU(3).
