{gamma} + {alpha}{sub 2} + B2 lamellar domains in rolled TiAl

The structure of {gamma} + {alpha}{sub 2} B2 lamellar domains have been examined in rolled TiAl containing B2-phase stabilized by Cr and Mo. Directly after rolling and rapid cooling the lamellar regions consist only of non-equilibrium {gamma} and {alpha}{sub 2}. Annealing at 1,000 C initiates both a {alpha}{sub 2} {yields} B2 solid state decomposition and {gamma}-lamellae coarsening. The resulting {gamma} + {alpha}{sub 2} + B2 lamellar domains consist of composite {alpha}{sub 2} + B2 laths lying between {gamma}-lamellae. The B2 grains precipitate with the orientation relationship (0002){sub {alpha}2}{parallel}{l_brace}110{r_brace}{sub B2} and <11-20>{sub {alpha}2}{parallel}<111>{sub B2}, having semi-coherent interfaces with both the parent {alpha}{sub 2} and the adjacent {gamma}-grains. A given {alpha}{sub 2} lamella may decompose to one or more of the six possible orientations of B2 phase resulting from this transformation.
