One of the key elements in the transportation system to bring Norwegian natural gas to Northwest Europe, the INTELSAT V communications satellite will provide the Bygnes center on Karmoy Island (Norway) with information to ensure that the gas flow through the Statpipe system is in step with consumption on the Continent. Toward the end of the century the control center will be handling 0.7-1.9 billion CF/day of gas, supplying consumers in West Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Austria. The west gas fractions from Gullfaks and Statfjord will be shipped from Karsto and fed into Norwegian and foreign petrochemical plants.
