The Gullfaks field is located in Norwegian block No. 34/10, 160 km west of the Norwegian coast and 15 km southeast of the Statfjord field. Recoverable reserves in the explored structure are estimated at 200 million tons of oil and 30 billion cu m of associated gas. The water depth varies from 135 m in the west and drops to 200 m toward the east into the Norwegian trench. Presently, the western part of the field is being developed. Phase I development consists of an integrated platform of the production, drilling, and quarters (PDQ) type, and a drilling, quarters, and water injection (DQW) platform to follow 2 years later. Functionally, the PDQ platform will be similar to the last of the Statfjord platforms, i.e., the crude will be processed and stabilized before being stored in the base of a Condeep concrete platform for transferral via loading buoys to tankers. The gas will be exported in pipeline through the Statpipe system and landed at Karsto, Norway, and in Emden, Germany.
