Chemical characterizations of microparticles is of great interest for applications such as environmental monitoring or detection of explosives and controlled substances. The ability to characterize a single microparticle is advantageous when the number of available microparticles is limited or the material of interest is condensed on just a few of the sample particles. The authors have developed a unique method for the chemical analysis of a single microparticle that involves levitation of the microparticle in a quadrupole ion trap followed by laser desorption mass spectrometry of the particle in the same trap.
