Characterization of fullerene derivatives by mass spectroscopy methods can be frustrating because, very often, common methods such as fast atom bombardment (FAB) or direct infrared or ultraviolet laser desorption result in spectra dominated by a single peak with m/z 720, corresponding to C{sub 60} produced during the desorption/ionization process. Fortunately, it is possible to take advantage of the soft ionization characteristics of matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) to circumvent this difficulty and obtain high quality spectra of intact fullerene derivatives. This paper will present the results of recent mass spectrometric studies of a series of fullerene derivatives by MALDI-Fourier transform mass spectrometry. Both positive and negative ion spectra with resolving power in excess of 10,000 are obtained with mass measurement accuracy in the low ppm range, sufficient to provide additional confirmation that the mass spectra of these derivatives are consistent with the expected empirical formulas.
