Testing of personnel dosimetry devices for hazard evaluation of Solvent Refined Coal droplet aerosols

Journal Article · · Am. Ind. Hyg. Assoc. J.; (United States)
The size-separating capabilities of two types of personnel dosimetry devices, Andersen 4-stage mini-cascade impactors and BDX cyclone separators, were evaluated for droplet aerosols of Solvent Refined Coal liquids. Performances were judged by comparison of sampling data against Andersen 8-stage ambient cascade impactors. Results show an excellent agreement between respirable mass fractions determined with the mini-samplers and the laboratory cascade impactors. Cyclone data were not in as good agreement with ambient cascade impactor findings. Mini-samplers also accurately measured the mass median aerodynamic diameters (MMAD) and geometric standard deviations of the aerosols. These findings suggest that mini-sampler personnel dosimetry cascade impactors may be used to assess accurately the deposition characteristics and potential health hazards of droplet aerosols in work environments where complex hydrocarbon mixtures may be of concern.
