Petroleum geologists pave the way

Journal Article · · Energy Detente; (United States)

This issue of Energy Detente summarizes the research meeting of 120 petroleum geologists in Santa Maria, CA, November 5-9, 1984 on Exploration for Heavy Crude Oil and Bitumen. The meeting was a cooperative venture between the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the UNITAR/UNDP Information Center for Heavy Crude and Tar Sands of New York City, headed by Dr. Joseph Barnea. Dr. Richard Meyer of the USGS, in summarizing the meeting said: The meeting established beyond any prior debate that this non-conventional petroleum is going to prolong the age of hydrocarbon energy by many, many years. The meeting also painted a dramatic picture of a future geopolitical shift in oil clout: from the Eastern to the Western Hemisphere. One of the most controversial papers was: The Effect of Hot Geothermal Brines on Crude Petroleum, presented by Dr. Barnea in conjunction with others. Papers on a variety of subjects related to the Orinoco Oil Belt, Venezuela, were felt to provide the greatest single contribution to petroleum geologists. This issue of Energy Detente also presents: (1) the refining netback data of the US Gulf and West Coasts, first half November 1984; and (2) the fuel price/tax series and principal industrial fuel prices as of October 1984 for countries of the Eastern Hemisphere.
