Optical frequency multiplication by an optical klystron

We report the first observation of the emission of coherent light by an electron beam bunched at 1.06 ..mu..m by a Nd-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser focused into an optical klystron. An enhancement of 10/sup 2/ to 10/sup 3/ over its spontaneous emission level at 355 nm has been observed in these experiments performed at the storage ring ACO at Orsay.
