Simultaneous, multiple wavelength lasing of (Er, Nd):Y/sub 3/Al/sub 5/O/sub 12/

Simultaneous lasing of both Er/sup 3 +/ and Nd/sup 3 +/ ions in yttrium aluminum garnet is reported. The crystal was doped with 15% Er/sup 3 +/ and 1% Nd/sup 3 +/ ions. The Er/sup 3 +/ ions lased at 2.94 ..mu..m and the Nd/sup 3 +/ ions in a broadband from 1.01 to 1.15 ..mu..m with a strong peak at 1.064 ..mu..m. Significant ion-ion interaction is suggested by the drastically altered fluorescent lifetimes and unusual lasing properties.
