Long-term exposure to auto exhaust and other pollutant mixtures

Journal Article · · Arch. Environ. Health; (United States)
This is an extension of a preliminary study with beagles exposed to combinations of irradiated and nonirradiated auto exhaust, SO/sub x/ and NO/sub x/. There were no effects after 36 months. After 61 months, 1.21 mg/m/sup 3/ NO/sub 2/ plus 0.31 mg/m/sup 3/ NO reduced pulmonary diffusing capacity but not perfusion and ventilation suggesting alteration of the alveolar capillary membrane. There was no change in tidal flow expiratory resistance although this is less sensitive than peak flow. Raw exhaust plus SO/sub x/ increased the ratio of residual volume to total lung capacity indicating relative hyperinflation not associated with obstructive defects. Exhaust increased pulmonary capillary blood volume suggesting compensation for CO-induced hypoxia. Irradiated exhaust, alone or with SO/sub x/, increased expiratory resistance. Irradiated exhaust impaired ventilatory distribution. Lung volume, compliance, and maximum breathing capacity were not changed by any treatment.
