Operating experience 1991-Weirton No. 1 blast furnace
Weirton Steel Corporation (WSC) is a 100 percent continuous casting integrated steel plant producing a variety of sheet products from hot rolled to tin plate. In January of 1984 WSC become an employee owned company. Presently two blast furnaces are in operation with an average hot metal goal of 6,600 tons per day. The paper describes modifications to improve operation of the blast furnace. Low coke rates are achievable by a combination of burden selection, fuel injection and a consistent furnace operation. The movable throat armor, above burden probes, top gas analyses and a burden model provide the technology to operate the furnace efficiently. Natural gas injection can be more cost effective than purchased coke.
