Rebuild of SSAB Oxeloesund blast furnace No. 4 and introducing the ROAX-TOP

SSAB Oxeloesund AB operates two low pressure blast furnaces (BF2 and BF4), both initially equipped with bell-top and movable armor. The furnaces have a 100% pellet burden and injects pulverized coal. The combination of technical limitations in the charging system and the present burden situation has made it difficult to stabilize and develop the blast furnace process. In order to meet demands for increased hot metal production a wall-working strategy had to be adopted. This practice has not favored low refractory wear and hot metal quality. It has long been evident that improvements in furnace operations could only be achieved by replacing the old furnace top and charging equipment with something more flexible which should permit considerable improvements in burden distribution. During the rebuild of BF4 in the summer of 1996 the old bell-top was replaced by a new construction: the ROAX (Rotating Oxeloesund AXelsson)-TOP. One of its features is the possibility to charge coke directly to the furnace center. The results after operating the new top for more than six months have been very encouraging and the ROAX-TOP will be installed on BF2 during the 1997 summer stop.
