Modular route for Prudhoe Bay

Describes a modular program which afforded a degree of fabrication not available with the truckable-section concept and also allowed the facilities to be placed ''where the oil is,'' unlike the barge-mounted approach. Atlantic Richfield Co. has designed, constructed and shipped modular facilities to the North Slope of Alaska each year since 1975. Discusses the unique design criteria required for totally enclosed process facilities and the module assembly sequence at the Lower 48 construction site. Advantages of modular technology include more attractive construction labor rate; higher construction labor productivity; a greater resource of skilled labor; minimum investment required for construction support facilities; easier communication and logistics; and proximity of the Prudhoe Bay field to the coast, making barge shipment and module movement by crawler feasible. The following systems are tested and commissioned prior to sealift: fire protection, lighting, control panels and remote instrumentation, hydraulics, heating and ventilation, and switchgear. Concludes that the concept of prefabricated modules is the optimum method of facility construction for the Prudhoe Bay field.
