Development of Alaska's Prudhoe Bay oil field involves drilling 550 oil wells, constructing housing and recreational facilities for the working population, and constructing the trans-Alaska pipeline. Efforts to accomplish these tasks without serious effect on the environment are discussed. The effect of the Alaskan climate on environmental conservation efforts is considered. Successful development of Prudhoe Bay should improve the efficiency and environmental safety of developing other Artic oil fields. (12 photos)
