Olefin oligomerization process and catalyst

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6181833
A process is described for oligomerizing a lower olefin having 2 to 8 carbon atoms contacting the lower olefin with a catalyst composition under oligomerization conditions at temperatures in the range of about from 0/sup 0/ to 100/sup 0/C. and pressures in the range of about from 1 to 45 atmospheres. The catalyst composition comprises a transition metal complex selected from complexes of nickel and palladium with a fluoro-organic thiol or sulfide ligand, having a single sulfur atom in a ligating position. The carbon atom adjacent the carbon to which the sulfur atom is attached has at least one fluoro substituent. Fluoroorganic thiol or sulfide does not contain any other ligating group or atom in a ligating position which will displace fluoro as a ligand. An organometallic-reducing agent selected from the group of borohydride and organoaluminum halides and alkoxides having the formula R*/sub m/AlX/sub n/ wherein R* is alkyl, aryl or arylalkyl; X is fluoride chloride, bromide, iodide or alkoxide and m is 1 or 2 and n is 3-m.
