Zinc oxide (ZnO) ceramics containing Bi{sub 2}O{sub 3}, Sb{sub 2}O{sub 3}, MnO{sub 2} and other metal oxides as additives exhibit a highly nonohmic characteristic (1 = kV{sup {alpha}}, where {alpha} is the nonideality factor of the device). A binary composite (ZnO+BaO) have shown nonohmic behavior, and the BaO concentration seems to define this nonlinearity as evidenced from their present results. Growth of large grain-size ZnO with only one additive may be useful in preparing low-voltage varistor.
