The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) document {open_quotes}Compilation of Air Pollutant Emission Factors, Volume I: Stationalry Point and Area Sources, Fifth Edition{close_quotes} (AP-42) has been crucial to inventory development efforts since it was first published in 1972. The Fifth Edition was issued in 1995. Chapters 1 and 3, entitled External Combustion Sources and Stationary Internal Combustion Sources, respectively, cover emission sources that are included in almost every emissions inventory. This paper discusses some recent updates to these chapters, one of which is the addition of toxics data for fossil fuel-fired boilers in Chapter 1, and another is the addition of greenhouse gas emission factors The toxic data were collected through a cooperative effort between the EPA and the Electric Power Research Institute. Another AP-42 improvement is the addition of information for NOx from coal-fired cell burners and the control of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions in diesel engines by ignition timing retard. These and other improvements to Chapters 1 and 3 will be released in supplement B to the AP-42 Fifth Edition, and the Factor Information Retrieval (FIRE) database system will be updated to reflect these changes.
