Possible IES revisions may cut task lighting

The Illuminating Engineers Society Inc. (IES) may revise its recommendations for task lighting levels to make them more flexible and less costly to energy users. A range of levels will replace specific recommendations and lighting engineers will be able to use five variables to determine the level needed for each task. These variables, which consider the importance of worker age, movement, accuracy, speed, and background reflectiveness, were identified by IES but not included in the 9-80 guidelines. IES officials hope to have the revisions approved in time for the new handbook. They point out that the changes should lead to more-effective and more-efficient lighting design, but not necessarily to less lighting. There is some concern over the impact this will have on construction power budgets. Phantom tubes and the Vista Lite Power Break have proved effective techniques for cutting lighting costs.
