Synthetic-fuels environmental research and development. Hearing before the Subcommittee on Energy Development and Applications and the Subcommittee on Natural Resources, Agriculture Research and Environment of the Committee on Science and Technology, US House of Representatives, Ninety-Seventy Congress, First Session, October 1, 1981
Two panels of witnesses involved in developing synthetic fuels testified on what research the industry is conducting to determine unknown environmental impacts and what steps it is taking to monitor and protect employees. Among the potential environmental hazards are acid rain and toxic pollutants. Oil shale companies contended that existing environmental standards and regulations adequately cover the industry and that research on this aspect dates back over 15 years, although the witnesses acknowledged the uncertainties inherent in any new technology and the need for continued research. They emphasized the quality of research and the level of compliance with existing regulations of the private sector. (DCK)
