An investigation of the temperature dependence of the structural characteristics of pitch coke was presented. Samples of pitch with a softening point of 150/sup 0/C, volatile matter of 49.8%, and a coke cake yield of 57.7% were coked to final temperatures ranging from 400/sup 0/C to 1000/sup 0/C at 100/sup 0/C intervals. This was done in a cylindrical laboratory oven using a heating rate of 5/sup 0/C per minute, and final temperatures were maintained for 15 minutes. The structural characteristics of the solid coke were determined by x-ray diffraction. It was determined that the principal changes in the properties of the coke occurred between 400/sup 0/C and 700/sup 0/C, where spatial condensation took place.
