The outlook for the offshore industry in 1984 is much brighter than was the case for 1983, but near-term difficulties still face the offshore industry. That is the consensus of a panel of offshore industry experts whose comments are presented. Ultimately, the economics of offshore projects go back to oil prices, and most of the advisors see crude prices as remaining stable through the next 6 to 12 mo. The experts forecast increased offshore activity in some geographical areas, while seeing others as remaining flat or declining. The more promising are offshore Norway and the UK, and the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana and Texas. Offshore California and Alaska show great geologic possibilities, but may be restrained by government and environmentalist obstruction. Canada, West Africa, and Australasia look favorable for the medium to long term. The Far East, China, and India hold near- or medium-term potential. Latin America is held back by local political and economic problems.
