Special report: blowouts. New relief well technology is improving blowout control

The success rate of killing blowouts with a single relief well has been enhanced significantly in recent years. Among new technologic developments primarily responsible for these better results are innovations in down-hole tools used to locate blowout well bores and steer relief wells to optimum bottom-hole locations. This work discusses new developments in (1) blowout well- bore locating devices with detection ranges to 300 ft that allow better positioning of relief wells and (2) gyroscopic survey tools and magnetic measurement-while-drilling devices that steer relief wells and determine bottom-hole location of blowout zones more accurately than previously possible.
