Mining in Utah

Sophisticated mining techniques and corporate enterprise have replaced the rugged-individualist prospector as uranium mining has taken over the once-agricultural area of Moab, Utah. Originally thought to be useless, the once-abundant uranium must now be located with scintillator-equipped aircraft. Early mining in the Moab area concentrated on uranium-associated deposits of radium and vanadium in carnotite ore. The uranium component was considered worthless until the Manhattan Project increased demand for the ores and prospecting became a boom industry, peaking in Utah in 1958. Concern for the environment did not affect uranium mining on public lands until the 1976 Federal Land Policy and Management Act.
