Gaseous and liquid fuel burner

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6165367
A simple, rugged burner designed by Consolidated Natural Gas Service Co., Inc., for metallurgical furnaces (for such processes as the smelting/refining of iron and steel, annealing, or other heat treating) can produce high temperatures and a reducing and noncarburizing atmosphere without causing carbonization or other fouling of the burner or furnace. The burner, which can be fabricated largely from standard parts, is designed for operation using rich fuel/oxidant ratios, with either air or oxygen as the oxidizer and gas or liquid as the fuel. A cylindrical mixing/combustion chamber is formed from a castable refractory. One end of the chamber is fitted with a burner disc that defines an uninterrupted annular passage for the oxidizer adjacent to the wall of the combustion chamber. Gaseous fuel is introduced into the chamber downstream from the burner disc; liquid fuel, axially through the burner disc. The use of a burner disc with a tangential gas-inlet arrangement ensures a mixing level sufficient to generate the required high temperatures while still keeping those temperatures below the point at which they would damage the stainless steel or the point at which they would damage the stainless steel or ceramic burner disc. Use of liquid fuels produces a flame of greater luminosity and emissivity, requiring additional cooling for the burner disc beyond that resulting from the passage of the oxidant around the flame holder.
