Oriented structure and crystallography of directionally solidified LaB{sub 6}-ZrB{sub 2} eutectic
- Northwestern Polytechnic Univ., Xi`an (China). National Lab. of Solidification Processing
Directional solidification of LaB{sub 6}-ZrB{sub 2}, by use of an electron beam heating technique, yielded oriented ZrB{sub 2} fibers in a LaB{sub 6} matrix. The average diameter of the ZrB{sub 2} fibers was {approximately} 0.2--1.2 {micro}m, with fiber lengths up to 100 {micro}m. Primary platelike LaB{sub 6} dendrites formed upon the solidification of an ingot with a composition of LaB{sub 6}-18 wt% ZrB{sub 2}. LaB{sub 6} was the first phase to nucleate when eutectic growth occurred, and ZrB{sub 2} showed nonfaceted growth. For the ingot solidified with planar growth the orientation relations of the phases were as follows: growth direction, [001]{sub LaB{sub 6}}{parallel}[00.1]{sub ZrB{sub 2}}; interfacial plane, ({bar 1}1.0){sub LaB{sub 6}}{parallel}(11.0){sub ZrB{sub 2}}.
