This process for increasing oil recovery involves the use of surfactants in a novel manner. In process an in-situ foam bank is generated in the reservoir and a dilute surfactant solution injected in an amount sufficient to form a buffer zone between the foam bank and a driving fluid to be injected later such that the foam bank is not adversely affected and its integrity is maintained. Thereafter, an aqueous driving fluid is injected to drive at least a major portion of the foam bank through the formation or reservoir to a production well. (15 claims)
