The kinetics of pyrocarbon formation of quartz filaments during the decomposition of methane, ethylene, and benzene have been studied. It is shown that an initial increase in the rate of pyrocarbon formation is accompanied by an increase in the surface area of the specimens, which is explained by roughness arising in the growing film of pyrocarbon. The steady-state rate of pyrocarbon formation, calculated when taking roughness into account, is established considerably earlier than the steady-state rate calculated for an initial geometrical surface. The results obtained provide an explanation for the disparity observed between the rate constants for pyrocarbon formation on quartz fibers and on carbon black.
