An investigation was made of a group of dyes suitable for the use in passive mode locking in a laser resonator with an operating wavelength in the range 1.1--1.4 ..mu... An iodine dissociation laser was used by way of illustration to demonstrate experimentally the generation of pulses of 0.3 nsec duration.
