An investigation was made of a film containing a polymethine dye (No. 2681u), which was used as a passive switch for mode locking in a YAG laser. The energy and duration of ultrashort pulses were determined and a study was made of the photostability and thermal stability of the passive switch. The results indicated that a film with a polymethine dye performed well as a passive mode-locking switch.
