Hope dims for SHD trailing cable

This paper examines the prospects for the introduction of SHD trailing cable in mines in the USA. The type G, G-GC and W cables now in use present several safety hazards not encountered with SHD cable. Experiments conducted at the Pennysylvania State University are described. Whilst these tests show SHD cables are much safer than the rest, they also illustrate that SHD is more difficult to work with in the mine environment and it is considerably more expensive. Thus, it is thought unlikely that SHD cable will be adapted in the USA, despite pressure from the Mine Safety and Health Administration.
