Allis-Chalmers has designed, built and successfully utilized a Process Development Unit for the testing of hydrocarbon-containing material. Over 55 tests have been conducted with western and eastern shales. In addition, successful retort tests have been completed using Utah tar sands and California diatomaceous earth. Problems encountered with the oil collection system have shown that the oil is not as easy to collect or account for as first anticipated. In solving this problem, however, valuable experience was gained to be used in larger-scaled projects. The PDU has also been used to develop pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient correlations that are the basis for scale-up. In addition, data obtained from the PDU on size effects, gas temperatures, solids temperatures and combustion requirements complete the information required to design demonstration, semi-works or commercial-scale plants.
