The Asian power market is estimated to require between 300-350 GW of new capacity by the year 2000. This requirement dwarfs anticipated demand growth in any other region of the world, and is approximated only by combining the markets for North America and Europe. Increasingly, the countries of Asia have turned to the private sector as the only viable source of investment capital to meet their power needs. A number of countries have addressed the role of the private sector in some significant manner. However, India leads the area in installed and anticipated capacity. The paper summarizes India's efforts in encouraging foreign private participation in power generation.
