Mechanical properties and failure of molybdenum-tungsten alloys at high temperatures

Temperature dependences of the mechanical properties and fracture mechanics of molybdenum-tungsten alloys produced by standard powder metallurgy methods were compared with similar data for technically pure tungsten produced by vacuum-arc melting with similar chemical composition to that of technically pure molybdenum. Strength and ductility were determined. Some of the consequences of this process were nucleation of recrystallization centers and the formation of microcracks. Polygonization was the critical stage in high-temperature deformation which determined the ductility and failure of the molybdenum-tungsten alloys.
