Minor additions of yttrium were arc melted with W and Mo to act as scavengers of oxygen and nitrogen and form stable, inert oxides and nitrides. Small-diameter ingots ( 7/8 in.) were melted in a continuous-casting, non- consumable electrode arc furnace using compacted powder charges. The ingots were machined and then formed into rod from which torsion specimens were machined. Recrystallized specimens were tested in torsion at various temperatures and the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature determined. Torsion data for the molybdenum alloys are tabulated. All specimens yielded before fracture, and even a temperature of --190 deg C was not sufficiently low to bracket the ductile-to- brittle transition temperature for molybdenum. (P.C.H.)
