The present colloquium on dynamics of explosions and reactive systems discusses ignition dynamics, diffusion flames and shear effects, the dynamics of flames and shear layers, turbulent flames, and flame propagation in combustion engines. Attention is given to detailed modeling of H2-O2 ignition by hot spots, ignition phenomena in H2-O2 mixtures, an analysis of the ignition mechanism of combustible mixtures by short-duration sparks, and flat plate boundary layer ignition with fuel thermal diffusion. Also discussed are axisymmetric hydrogen-air diffusion flames and their flame structure, the geometric effects on premixed turbulent propagating flames, and the numerical simulation of a premixed flame in a turbulent boundary layer. Topics addressed include flame propagation behavior in a variable hydrodynamic constant volume combustion chamber and the effect of turbulent fluid motion on low-temperature autoignition of fuel-air mixture under piston compression.
