Neutron diffraction determination of the structure of an ordered scheelite-type: Zr/sub 3/GeO/sub 8/

Journal Article · · Mater. Res. Bull.; (United States)
The crystal structures of ZrGeO/sub 4/ and Zr/sub 3/GeO/sub 8/ were determined from neutron powder diffraction data. The compound Zr/sub 3/GeO/sub 8/ shows a new structural type closely related to the scheelite arrangement displayed by ZrGeO/sub 4/ (I4/sub 1//a, Z = 4). In both phases, germanium atoms are located at the center of tetragonally distorted tetrahedra defining isolated GeO/sub 4/ groups. As in the structure of tetragonal zirconia, two sets of four oxygen neighbors are surrounding zirconium atoms in 8-fold coordination.
