BS> Solid solutions GeO/sub 2/-AO/sub 2/ (A = Zr or Hf) were prepared by the coprecipitation method. Radiocrystallographic analysis permitted the identification of the phases present after thermal treatment between 50 and 1600 deg C. Two compounds were distinguished in each system: AGeO/sub 4/ and A/sub 3/ GeO/sub 8/. The AGeO/sub 4/ compounds have the Scheelite CaWO/sub 4/ structure with a face-centered lattice. A comparison of tbe Debye-Scherrer diagrams of HfGeO/sub 4/ and Hf/sub 3/GeO/sub 8/ show supplementary rays in the latter compound. The intensity of the rays correspond to that calculated. The diagram of Zr/sub 3/GeO/sub 8/ shows no supplementary rays with respect to that of ZrGeO/ sub 4/. An extended region of homogeneity which is temperature-independent from 1200 to 1600 deg is found at the stoichiometric composition. The equilibrium diagrams of the systems ZrO/sub 2/-GeO/sub 2/ and HfO/sub 2/-GeO/sub 2/ show three distinct monophase regions occupied by quadratic phases whose structures are simply derived from the structure of quadratic ZrO/sub 2/.
