Surfactant precipitation and redissolution in brine

Journal Article · · J. Colloid Interface Sci.; (United States)
A model is presented for the precipitation and redissolution of surfactants in brine. At a given CaCl/sub 2/ concentration, increasing the surfactant concentration causes the surfactant to precipitate and further increase of the surfactant concentration causes the precipitate to redissolve. It is found that this process can be described by the solubility product of the precipitate when proper accounts have been made for the surfactant monomer and counterion activities. Expressions are given which describe the thermodynamic equilibrium between surfactant monomers, micelles, and precipitates. Specifically, the flat-plate approximation of the Gouy- Chapman theory of electric double layer has been used to calculate the electrical free energy of micellization as well as the ionic activity coefficients in the presence of charged micelles. Good agreement between theory and experiment is found for the system of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate in NaCl and CaCl/sub 2/ brine. 34 references.
