Phenol tars obtained during formed coke production contained 60% cresols and xylenols as used in turbine oils and plastics for service at elevated temperatures. The initial coal charge comprised 60% gas and 40% weakly caking coal, the gaseous product was tapped at 784 C prior to 10% NaOH extraction of the phenols and ensuing rectification in a laboratory column. Chromatographic examination revealed that the total phenols contained 76% phenol and methyl-substituted homologues, and a 32% xylenol content. Fractional analysis showed a total of 60% m- and n-cresols, whilst the xylenol fraction recovered 61% of the crude phenol available. Vat residues contained 30% of 3,4- and 3,5-xylenols, together with m-ethylphenol. The high-boiling phenol methyl and ethyl derivatives in the vat residues are suitable as anticorrodants.
