Transportation of natural and other gas by pipeline leakage surveys

These proposed US Materials Transportation Bureau amendments would require the use of leak-detector equipment for surveys on all odorized and unodorized gas transmission lines at certain time intervals in areas (Classes 3 and 4) with buildings of four or more stories, areas where pipelines are within 100 yd of buildings that are occupied by 20 or more persons during normal use, and in locations where the area between the line and building wall is covered by concrete, asphalt, or other materials which would restrict leaking gas from venting to the atmosphere. Leak detector equipment would not be required for surveys on these lines in Classes 1 and 2 nonbusiness areas. Because of the heavier-than-air quality of petroleum gas, leakage surveys of such buried pipelines must be made by sampling the subsurface atmosphere at a minimum 36 cm depth with a detector capable of detecting 10 ppm of petroleum gas, or at pipe depth with a detector capable of detecting petroleum gas at 10% of the lower explosive limit.
