Two-photon formation of spin-one resonances and the nature of the /ital E/(1420)

A powerful new tool in meson spectroscopy has become available with the recent observation of two spin-one mesons produced by the interaction of one nearly real and one highly virtual photon. The first of these mesons, detected initially by the TPC/2..gamma.. collaboration and confirmed by the Mark II, JADE, and CELLO collaborations using the reaction ..gamma gamma..*/r arrow//ital X/(1420)/r arrow//ital K/+- /ital K//sup 0//sub /ital s//..pi../sup +-/, is almost surely not a /ital qq/bar // state. It has a mass, width, and /ital K/*(892)/ital K/ decay like the /ital E/(1420) observed in hadronic reactions and reported variously as O/sup /minus// and 1/sup +/. Its observation with ..gamma gamma..* (single-tagged) and not with ..gamma gamma.. (untagged) shows it to be spin one. To calibrate this observation, a known spin-one state, the /ital J//sup /ital PC//=1/sup + +/ /ital f//sub 1/(1285), or /ital D/, was observed in the state /eta/..pi../sup +//pi/minus// by the same experimental groups. The two-photon widths of these two mesons are not consistent with their both being in the ground-state axial vector nonet, and there are many reasons why the /ital E/ is not that mainly /ital ss/bar // state. It is likely to be a four-quark state, probably as a /ital K/*/ital K/ molecule.
