The problem of establishing the mechanism of breaking of SU(3)xSU(3) chiral symmetry and estimating the pion-nucleon sigma term, which is the parameter of this breaking, is the subject of this state-of-the-problem review. The main methods of determining the pion-nucleon sigma term are reviewed. The possible reasons for the large spread in the existing estimates of sigma/sub piN/ are investigated, and the main uncertainties of the various methods are established. The analysis leads to the establishment of an acceptable interval for sigma/sub piN/ from 30 to 50 MeV, this being in agreement with the (3,3*)direct-sum(3*,3) mechanism for breaking the SU(3)xSU(3) chiral symmetry in accordance with the Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner model and QCD.
