The reaction of Mn(III) with S(IV) has been studied in perchloric acid solutions. The stoichiometry of the reaction is one Mn/sup 3+/ consumed per SO/sub 2/ consumed, and the production of dithionate was confirmed. The raction shows a strong inverse dependence on acid concentration. At 5.92 M acid concentration and over the temperature range 15.4-34.9/sup 0/C, the rate constant is k = (1.1+/-0.5) X 10/sup 7/ exp(-1970 +/- 100/T) M/sup -1/ s/sup -1.
