The kinetics of the reaction of Co(III) with hypophosphorous acid was studied through a range of concentrations of H ion from approximately 2 x 10/sup - 1/ M to 4 M, of Co(III) from approximately 1 x 10/sup -2/ M to 5 x 10/sup -4/ M, and of the hypophosphorous acid from approximately 5 x 10/sup -2/ M to 3 x 10/sup -3/ M. The rate expression for the kinetics through this range of concentrations was determined, and the reaction rates are discussed. The kinetics of the reaction of Ce(IV) with hypophosphorous acid was studied (25 deg C) through a range of concentrations of H ion from approximately 4.6 M to 1 M, of Ce(IV) from approximately 7 x 10/sup -2/ M to 1 x 10/sup -2/ M, and of hypophosphorous acid from approximately 1.5 x 10/sup -2/ M to 3 x 10/sup -3/ M. The rate expression for the kinetics over this range of concentrations was also determined, and the reaction rates are discussed. The activation energy E/sub a/, activation ertropy DELTA S /sup plus or minus /, and the rate constants for Ce(IV) and Co(III) are tabulated. Electron transfer and oxidation mechanisms are postulated. (M.P.G.)
