A process is described for reducing the permeability of a subterranean formation traversed by a well bore which comprises introducing into the formation via the well bore a polymerizable material which remains constant in volume or expands on polymerization, the polymerizable material being selected from the group consisting of bicyclic lactones, bicyclic ortho esters and spiro orthocarbonates, and thereafter allowing such polymerization to take place.
