Despite delays, Shell/Esso's Fulmar field in the North Sea development is scheduled to commence production on time and within budget. While 4 pre-drilled wells on Fulmar helped speed the 589-million pounds development, the company also had made contingency plans for possible setbacks including the lack of use of the support rig. The Fulmar field is situated 170 miles east of Dundee, Scotland, in the UK sector of the North Sea. Oil reserves, originally estimated at 550 million bbl have now been revised downward to 450 million bbl. The platform, standing in a water depth of only 270 ft, will have a maximum production capacity of 180,000 bpd of crude and 90 MMSCFD of gas, and water injection will be at a rate of 210,000 bpd. Initial startup is expected to reach 100,000 bpd of crude rated at 40 API. The field's offshore loading and storage system comprises a converted super-tanker capable of holding up to 1,380,000 bbl of crude and the first North Sea oil processing system to combine a permanently moored tanker with a single anchor leg mooring.
