Title: Report of conference on exchange of experiences with Gelsenberg (in German)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6129265

This report contained a table of comparative data from liquid-phase coal hydrogenation at Poelitz and at Gelsenberg. The most important difference between the plants was the higher yield, thus allowing a higher throughput, at Poelitz. The conference was discussing the reasons for this difference, since the operations at Poelitz and Gelsenberg were quite similar. One seemingly probable cause for the difference was the higher hydrogen partial pressure need in Poelitz. The higher pressure (over 600 atm. at Poelitz versus less than 1000 atm. at Gels.) was probably achieved by a better oil-washing of the circulating gases. One of the major effects of the higher hydrogen pressure was the different nature of the sludge residue. Although the sludge contained more solids at Poelitz than at Gelsenberg, the oil in the sludge contained significantly less asphalts. Some of the other kinds of data given in the table were on throughputs of coal paste and gas, temperatures at various spots during the processing and properties of products and residues. Finally, there was a table comparing properties of the finished product gasolines of the two plants and giving some data about vapor-phase processing.
